The Linux, BSD, Open Source CD/DVD Source is a non profit organization, run by a group of professionals dedicated to spreading the use of Open Source Software, including Open Source Operating Systems such as Linux and BSD.
Based in Pune, one of the major IT destinations in India, host to many companies working on various Open Source Software. We believe that the power of Open Source is yet to really take off in a country such as India. With the penetration of the PC and the Internet in India, the problem of software piracy has penetrated equally. Most of those indulging in software piracy are home and small office home office (SOHO) users, who don't even know that using pirated / un-licensed software is illegal. Even among those that do, few know that there is an alternative. That alternative is Open Source!
Most home and SOHO users do not use the computer to do much more than manage their documents and spreadsheets, listen to music, browse the Internet, use basic email software, perhaps watch TV on the computer, and play games. Almost all the needs of such users are easily taken care of by the Open Source operating systems available today. 'Live' versions of Linux that run directly off the CD are available today are able to perform all these tasks and much more. Considering that a very high percentage of users have never used a computer before, and know little of using one, choosing an Operating System is unthinkable for them. We encourage the PC vendors to promote Linux to their customers. Linux is easy to use, powerful, secure and very importantly, extremely cheap compared to Microsoft Windows.
Stop Piracy! Use Open Source! Use Linux / BSD!
We do not discourage users from using / vendors from promoting Microsoft or any other companies' products. We merely are against software piracy, and the use and promotion of pirated software. Give the users a user friendly Open Source Operating System such as PuppyLinux, / Ubuntu / Knoppix / MEPIS or any other Linux / BSD the user would prefer. Let the users buy a fully licensed copy of whatever commercial software they want / need.
Feel free to download a copy of Linux / BSD from the vendors' sites. We even have some versions you can download right here. To read about and discuss before you download, use our Forum. If you are on a dial-up internet connection, or have a slow connection, or you cannot download for any reason, we even have an online store where you can order CDs / DVDs of Linux / BSD / Open Source Software. All such CDs / DVDs are made available at very low costs. Those who do not have online payment facilities / do not wish to make online payments can still order. CDs/DVDs can be sent to you via VPP.
